Aim of the course

Familiarizing the textual tradition of ancient Indian philosophy.

 Objectives of the course

1.      An overall understanding of the different approaches of ancient Indian philosophy systems.

2.      Introducing the theories and categories of different doctrines of ancient Indian philosophy.

3.      Making the students accustomed with the style of logical presentation of sastraic works.

4.      Preparing the students for the self study of the higher texts on Vedanta and Mimamsa.

5.      Enabling the students for utilizing the Mimamsa theories and categories for analyzing language.

 

Course outline

Module I                 Position of ancient Indian philosophical doctrines – different systems of Vedanta doctrine – important categories of Advaita Vedanta – literature of Advaita Vedanta – different views articulated in major Upanisads on the concept of Brahma.

Module II            Textual study of Vedantasara of Sadananda.

Module III           The aim of Mimamsa doctrine – different approaches in interpretations of Vedas – important works in the field of Mimamsa – the apauruseya concept of Mimamsa regarding the Vedas – relevance of Mimamsa regarding the Vedas – relevance of Mimamsa categories beyond the realm of Vedic interpretation – Mimamsa theories as linguistic tools.

Module IV           Textual study of Arthasangraha of Laugaksibhaskara.
