Course outcomes

1. Understand the poetic Genius of Kalidasa

2. Understand theLiterary tradition of Classical Sanskrit

3. Understand the thematic development of nature in the Khandakavyas of

Kalidasa.

4. Critically analyse the poetic merits of Mahakavyas ofKalidasa. 5. Critically analysedranas of Kalidasa based on intensive study.

6. Understand the geographical aspects of Kalidasas works.

7. Analyse the social aspects of Kalidasas works.

Course Outline: Four Units

UNIT I- Introduction to Indian Kavya literature; Literary traditions, Classical

poets: Bhasa- Kalidasa Bhavabhooti-Sudraka-Sriharsha-Bharavi Magha

Date of Kalidasa-Different opinions on the date of Kalidasa- legends on

Kalidasa -Suktis on Kalidasa-; 

UNIT II -A general introduction to Kalidasa's works:

Critics on Kalidasa; Influence of Kalidasa on later Literature

A general study of Khanda kavyas of Kalidasa. Meghasandesa and

Rtusamhara- Kalidasa's Poetic style Poetic beauty, Nature depicted y

Kalidasa-Enviornment and cycle of rtus presented by Kal.dasa

Geographical importance of the two KavyaS.

UNIT III-Mahakavyas of Kalidasa A general Study. Content and st yle of

Kumarasambhava and Raghuvansa iterary rmerits of the mahakavyas.
